Patriarchy- men superior to women

The most prevalent theme in the film is Patriarchy. Patriarchy is the ‘‘manifestation and institutionalization of male dominance over women and children in the family and the extension of male dominance over women in society in general’’ (Lerner, 1986). Feminists often aspire to eliminate patriarchy and create a world with greater inclusion; a world where men are equal to women. Women share equal rights in the United States, Canada and England. However, the world to this day is full of countries where patriarchy is a dominant ideology. (Farrelly, 2011)

The film challenges the idea of patriarchy. It was prevalent in society during the suffrage movement. The entire suffrage movement was to test and rid patriarchal ruled society. The film questions patriarchy by depicting most of the male characters in the movie in a negative light, especially the government officials. The women, who were a part of the suffrage movement, were really challenging the social norms for the time. They had to challenge the white men who were in power to share power with women. It was probably really difficult to share power with humans who have always been seen as beneath them. The movie shows patriarchy in many ways, but specifically with the Senator and his wife. He is seen deciding what is best for his family. The senator decides how much money his wife can have, and what she can do with that money. The movie is a good depiction of male dominance during the time.

White Privilege- white dominance in society

In the time of women suffrage movement, the fight for minority rights was still being challenged. The movie downplays how prominent this was in the time. In the movie, the idea white privilege was challenged when Ida B. Wells wanted to join the parade. Alice Paul refuses her because she doesn't want more controversy then there already will be in the parade because she was afraid that white southern women wouldn't vote with them if there were blacks participating. This made it apparent that Alice Paul put the votes of the white females above the minorities. White dominance was prevalent back then and still may occur now.

Democracy- the right to be a part of our government

The suffragists really utilized democracy, which is one of the reasons the 19th amendment was finally ratified. The women used democracy as an argument to fight for suffrage and accused President Wilson of violating democracy. In the film the suffragists were shown having faith in democracy, they utilized and eventually received the liberty they deserved.
