Conclusion

Iron Jawed Angels, despite some factual errors, is an accurate depiction of the events happening during the 1900's on women's suffrage. Women's suffrage was a very brutal event where many women were treated very unfairly and held in prison for an unconstitutional reason. Iron Jawed Angels had a lot of similarities in the movie and followed as close as it could to the chronological aspect of history. The big thing we found that was out of order was at the end of the movie. In the movie, when it shows the "angels" getting out of jail, it ties it in with President Wilson passing the 19th amendment. In reality, the amendment didn't pass for another year after the women got out of jail.

While the similarities far outweigh the differences in the movie, one of the big differences was that the hunger strikes were depicted in the movie to be because the women were mad about their imprisonment. However, we find out through research and articles in the New York Times that they were on hunger strike because they wanted to have fair treatment like the other prisoners. Other differences include: no romantic interest with Ben Weissman, the reality of men's involvement, the passing of the 19th amendment, as well as added fictional characters.

The New York Times covered this time in history very closely as well as sought out truth and reported it. The Times framed the women to be very stubborn as well as framed the government to make it look like they didn't care. At times, the newspaper framed the women to look like they were taking a stance on a non-important event.

The film uses the media effects theories of Agenda-Setting, Gatekeeping and Framing. In the movie, there are also ideologies presented as patriarchy, white privilege and democracy.

We as a group appreciated the movie assigned to us. We are women; the 19th amendment has a profound effect on us.Watching the film and researching Alice Paul and all of the other suffragists, gave us a greater appreciation for all of what these women did for us. We are able to voice our opinion and help the United States pick our president, because of the efforts of these women.  Even if some of Alice Paul’s method may seem radical, they were well worth it. Because of her persistence we have rights. We appreciate the suffragists. This research and film had a life altering effect on us. We have voted, but never really understood how important it is for us to vote. Now that we have a better understanding of Alice Paul and all the other suffragists, we desire to be a more active part of government. We really are grateful for the opportunity to vote!  We desire to be stronger and braver women, like the suffragists. This project had a huge personal effect on us and we are happy and proud to be women.
